Charcoal Grill on the Hill
Charcoal Grill on the Hill in Kew is famous (to those who know it) for their wagyu-grade meat and extensive wine list from Australia and Burgundy. The restaurant also prides itself on great service, it’s family owned and run, so expect to be treated like one of their own.
Impressively, all fresh fruit and vegetables are sourced from just down the road at Toscanos in Kew. Similarly, the bread is baked and delivered fresh daily from French Fantasy in South Yarra. The steaks are selected and aged by head chef Fabian Caminiti, and largely consist of grain fed mid-range marble score Wagyu beef and is supplemented by grass fed South Gippsland and Tasmanian beef. The steaks are cut to order so, depending on your budget, you can go as large as you would like. For example, a 300G Scotch Fillet is $49, though to upgrade it to 500G would set you back $81, and the gargantuan 700G is almost $100. Previously known as Wellers of Kangaroo Grounds, Fondata had a lot to live up to when it was launched at the beginning of 2017, and to everyone’s delight it has done just that. Steeped in history, the building was founded in 1872 and over the next 140 years took many shapes. It was the restaurant and bar which was built in the 90s that made it famous. This restaurant remained opened until 2015 and the legacy continues today with the venue reopening as Fondata 1872.
The owners wanted take the venue back to its origins and today acts as a meeting place for the community where people can gather, catch up and feast on an amazing Italian menu. The star of the is definitely dry aged certified Angus Beef Porterhouse served with baked onion chutney, sweet potato crisps and red wine sauce. St Andrews Pub
This country pub is located in St Andrews, at the foot of the Kinglake National Park, around 40 minute drive from Melbourne. Founded during the Gold Rush in the 1880s, the pub was originally known as the Queens Town Pub, however, little about the joint has changed apart from the name. The history of the area draws tourists out from Melbourne, but live music is what the locals love, and there are usually two or three gigs a week to keep everyone happy.
