Everyone knows the best thing to do on a rainy day, or a boiling hot day for that matter is to take refuge in a movie theatre. The space which is now occupied by Lido Cinemas has a colourful history. The site was originally constructed in 1917 and aptly named the Glenferrie Theatre. Since then it has been home to several dancing schools and theatres, a miniature golf complex, the Naughty Nineties Theatre Restaurant and the Lido Cabaret and Restaurant. However, by 2000 the top levels of the historic complex had become tired. Shortly thereafter, a refurbishment with investment in preserving some of the historic features took place and Lido Cinemas on Glenferrie Road Hawthorn was born.
This complex is about far more than just movies. Get there before the show to check out the interior of the cinemas, the patterned press metal ceiling is still intact from its opening in 1917. The eight screens play all the new release Hollywood blockbusters, but also feature fresh art house films. Although the array of movies may be different, one thing is for sure, each customer at Lido will enjoy an intimate and specialised cinematic experience. The indoor fun does not stop there, check out their website for many unique upcoming film festivals as well as special events, like the open mic comedy night that runs every Thursday.lidocinemas.com.au 675 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn
Heide Museum of Modern Art
Immerse yourself in rich culture and history at the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Born out of a love for art, John and Sunday Reed purchased a 15 acre property in 1934 and invited like-minded people to join them on a journey to create, discuss and promote modern art and literature. It became a public art museum in 1981. Since then the museum has continued to grow, the surrounding bushland and green gardens also attract many people during the summer months.
Since 1981 the space has held over 300 solo, group and thematic exhibitions and it doesn’t look like slowing down. The museum is the perfect cultural experience that you and the kids can share, give them their first insight into true Australian modernism and architecture and teach them that there are so many ways to be creative. Explore the many rooms and buildings, it really is a great place for indoor family fun!heide.com.au 7 Templestowe Road, Bulleen
Escape Room Melbourne
The Escape Room in Flemington is a great way to bond with work colleagues or family, however, it is not for the faint-hearted, being locked in a room can be a scary experience so be sure to word any children up about the experience and see if they are still keen. It’s funny though, often children are great assets in an escape room situation as they add a completely different point of view from adults and often the answer really is right in front of you.escaperoom.com.au 9 Lee Street, Flemington
