Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the 25 kilometres of urban trails, 6 kilometres of rural trails and many informal trails that run throughout Shire of Nillumbik. Urban trails link to the Melbourne Metropolitan Trail Network and include the Diamond Creek Trail, the Plenty River Trail and the Aqueduct Trail. Other trails of interest include the Heidelberg Artists Trail, Heritage Walks and the Gawa Wurundjeri Aboriginal Resource Trail.
